Russian gas supplies via the "Turkish stream" will help ensure energy security in Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the launch of the gas pipeline in Istanbul.

At the ceremony of launching the gas pipeline, Putin noted that this event is important not only for Russia and Turkey, but also for the entire European continent.

The official launch ceremony of the gas pipeline was held in the Turkish capital with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Serbian President Alexander Vucic, and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

On the Russian side, the event was also attended by energy Minister Alexander Novak and Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller.

The new gas pipeline consists of two strands with a total capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters per year, laid along the bottom of the Black sea. One of the pipes is intended for Turkey, the rest of the fuel will go to the countries of South-Eastern Europe.
