MRI poll: majority of Georgian population in favor of proportional system of elections

Most of the population of Georgia supports the transition to a fully proportional electoral system-the ruling party promised to carry out such a reform, but then the deputies from the "Georgian dream" failed the bill.

According to the study, 68% of respondents heard about the proportional electoral system.

Of those who have heard about it, 78% say they support the proportional system, 9% are against it, and 13% have no position on the issue.

58% say that the transition to a fully proportional system will have a positive effect on the development of democracy in Georgia, according to 9% the effect will be negative, and 33% at this stage have no answer to this question.

The results of the survey were published on November 18. The study was conducted between September 11 and 14 I IRI and funded by USAID. Baltic surveys/The Gallup Organization. Nationwide, 1,500 people were interviewed. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2.5 percent.

According to the current Constitution of Georgia, the electoral system was to change to fully proportional only in 2024. Until then, in parliamentary elections, 77 deputies had to be elected on party lists, and 73-in single-member constituencies.
