9 348 people applied for retention of citizenship of Georgia
9,348 citizens applied to the service development Agency of the Ministry of justice to retain their Georgian citizenship. About it today on a press-conferences were told by the Deputy Minister of Justice Michael Sarjveladze.
According to Sarjveladze, persons with citizenship of another country, in respect of whom Georgian citizenship has not yet been suspended, could apply to the Agency for the development of the civil service of the Ministry of justice of Georgia until August 15, 2019 with a request to retain Georgian citizenship.
"A person who is already a citizen of another country, but its status of a citizen of Georgia has not yet suspended the right to apply for retention of citizenship of Georgia until 31 December 2020; a person who has lost the citizenship of Georgia in connection with the receipt of citizenship of another country is entitled to apply to the Agency for the development services of the Ministry of justice of Georgia until 31 December 2020 with restoration of Georgian citizenship under a simplified procedure. This person must pass the appropriate test in the Georgian language (the grounds for refusal are subject to verification), " Mikhail Sarjveladze said.
On October 4, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili signed an amendment to the organic law of Georgia "on citizenship". According to the amendment, the deadline for applying for Georgian citizenship has been extended until 31 December 2020.
