UNESCO Director General Odrae Azule named Tbilisi the world capital of the book of 2021. The decision was made on the basis of the recommendation of the Committee of advisors of the world book capital. The Commission met in Switzerland in June 2019. The slogan of the program is " And your next book..?".

The program focuses on the use of modern technologies to promote reading among young people. As noted on the official website of UNESCO, the program covers several important large-scale activities. The program will include libraries, a book festival for children, and digital projects to turn books into games and restore Georgia's first publishing house.

The main purpose of the events is to promote reading and ensure the availability of books for social strata.

In 2021, the world book capital events will begin on international book and copyright day, i.e. April 23. The cities that UNESCO declares to be the world capital of books, undertake to organize the popularization of books and reading and activities throughout the year.

In 2019, the world capital of the book was named Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, and in 2020 — the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

UNESCO confers the title of world capital of the book since 2001. Then this title was awarded to the capital of Spain Madrid.
