Nadia’s Initiative, as part of its efforts to restore life and reconstruct the Sinjar area, has begun building a new school with implementing partner the Ezidi Organization for Documentation. The building process is ongoing.

In August 2014, ISIS launched a systematic attack on the Sinjar region, killing many Yazidis and destroying infrastructure and vital facilities that the Yazidi community relied on in their everyday lives. Importantly, schools, which allowed the people of Sinjar to access training, creativity, and knowledge, were rendered unusable.

The Bahrava School, located 12km south of Sinuni sub-district, was built between 2004-2005 as in coordination with the Sinjar Education Directorate within the Ministry of Education in the Kurdistan Region. It was heavily affected by the ISIS attacks of 2014. It consisted of 6 classrooms, 1 administration room, and a store made of clay. Approximately 100 students attended this institution. Parts of the school were demolished or looted by ISIS, while other parts were destroyed due to heavy rains and other harsh weather.

The village of Bahrava was inhabited by around 500 people (80 families).  They depended on agriculture and ranching for their daily needs, but they were forced to leave their village when ISIS occupied the area. They were finally able to return after ISIS’s defeat. Today, their children are struggling to continue their education because their school remains in ruins, and they are forced to travel long distances to reach the nearest schools in the complex of Khansour or the village of Ksarki in Mount Sinjar.
