President of Georgia presented two candidates from the Board of the National Bank of Georgia
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili presented to Parliament the candidacies of former deputy from the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party Nana Keinishvili and ex-head of the Tbilisi Development Fund Teymuraz Khomeriki for two vacant posts on the Board of the National Bank, the presidential administration said.
This is the second attempt of the president in a year to present candidates to the Board of the National Bank. In June 2023, the Georgian Parliament rejected the candidacies of experienced persons in banking – lecturer and editor of the National Bank's journal "Economics and Banking" Georgy Bakradze and Director of the Institute of Economics and Business, member of the Board of Ziraat Bank Dimitri Japaridze.
The reason for the refusal to support the candidates in the ruling party was that the president made the decision alone without consulting the majority.
To date, the council has seven members instead of nine, with seven people represented – the First Vice-President, three Vice-presidents and three independent members.
The Council of the National Bank is the highest body of the National Bank, which is responsible for the management of reserves. The Council determines the expenses of the National Bank and is responsible for the rules for the formation of the exchange rate of foreign currencies in relation to the national currency.
