What foreigners spend money on in Georgia
Foreigners in the second quarter of 2023 spent a total of about 3.4 billion GEL ($ 1.3 billion) in Georgia, which is 49.1 more than in the same period last year, according to the website of the National Statistics Service "Geostat".
According to the agency, most of this amount was spent on accommodation, as well as on food and drink.
During the reporting period, the expenses of a foreigner for one trip to Georgia averaged about 2,292 GEL.
For what purpose do foreigners come
In total, from April to June 2023, foreigners crossed the border of Georgia 1.7 million times. At the same time, persons over the age of 15 have visited Georgia 1.5 thousand times, which is 58.7% more than in the same period last year.
The main objectives of the visits to Georgia were rest, visiting relatives and acquaintances, as well as transit through the territory of Georgia to other countries.
Most tourists visited Tbilisi and Adjara in the second quarter. On average, foreigners spent 4.8 nights in Georgia.
Most of the visits were made from Turkey during the reporting period – 366.1 thousand, which is 24% of the total number of visits. This is followed by Russia – 320.8 thousand (22.1%) and Armenia – 214.6 thousand (12.4%).
What income has Georgia received from tourism in the past years
In the pre-pandemic 2019, Georgia broke its records. The number of international travelers exceeded 9.3 million, and revenues amounted to $ 3.3 billion. In 2020, revenues from the industry dropped to an incredibly low level – $ 427.7 million with the number of international travelers at 1.7 million.
In 2021, tourism brought Georgia $1.2 billion. In total, about 1.6 million tourist visits were made to Georgia in 2021.
As for 2022, the revenue from tourists amounted to more than $ 3.5 billion. In general, 5.4 million international travelers visited Georgia in 2022.
