Oliver Varhelyi - In October we will present substantial proposals for EU enlargement, we are ready to come out with bold ideas

"In October we will present substantial proposals for the enlargement of the European Union", Oliver Varhelyi, European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement, said in an interview with EURACTIV.
According to him, the expansion of the European Union by 2030 is possible, but only if the candidates and the bloc itself redouble their efforts.
"There has always been a question: do we want to do this? And this is the first time I hear from the European Council that they want to do this — it is welcome", Oliver Varhelyi said.
The European Commissioner was asked about the statement of the President of the European Council Charles Michel, according to which the countries of the Western Balkans and other EU candidate countries, as well as the European Union, should be ready to expand by 2030.
To the question, as far as possible, Varhelyi replied: "Anything the EU wants to do is possible", but stressed that there should be no insistence on specific deadlines.
"I don't think it was a question of dates. This is a matter of political will and a matter of implementation. Implementation by the EU, but also implementation by our partner countries of the Western Balkans or three other candidate countries - Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. In 2030, of course, it is possible, but for this to happen, it means that we all – all EU institutions, all member states and all candidate countries - must redouble our efforts to come to this. We are ready to come up with bold proposals and new ideas", Oliver Varhelyi said.
According to him, the expansion plan, which will be presented next month, will accelerate the integration of candidates into the European Union.
"This plan will accelerate not only the institutional, but also the real integration of these countries into the European Union. It includes everything from reforms in the field of the rule of law, democracy, economic reforms and integration, improving the investment climate and ending with financial support, which is also important to eliminate development gaps before these countries become members of the European Union", the European Commissioner said.
