In the Sharia camp, located near the town of Duhok in Northern Iraq, the surviving Yazidis plan to return up to 3,000 of their loved ones, who are still in captivity, and are looking for answers to questions about the fate of almost 7,000 other missing persons. Among the survivors here is Leila Taalo, a young mother of two who has lived in Sharia since 2017, when she was restored from Raqqa, Syria, where she was enslaved by ISIS.

in August. 3, 2014, she and her husband and their children were captured along with most of Leila's family when they tried to escape to the Sinjar mountains. She doesn't know what happened to her husband, but she was sold into slavery with her children. For nearly three years, Leila was sold nine times among ISIS fighters and their supporters before her brother was able to buy her and her children out. Now Leila and the other surviving members of her family, including her two nieces, who were also sold into slavery, live together in this tent.

Five years ago, in August 2014, ISIS extremists launched a genocide campaign in the areas of Iraq's Sinjar and Nineveh, which horrified the whole world. Thousands of Yazidi and Christian families were enslaved.  Those who were too slow, too old, or too unlucky to escape the attack were captured. Many were killed; many, especially Yazidi women with children, were sold into slavery.

The counteroffensive by the Iraqi-American coalition eventually drove ISIS out of Sinjar in 2015 and Nineveh in 2017. Since then, thousands of Yazidi families have been able to return to their communities as they have recovered. Sinjar was virtually unchecked by extremists, followed by an air and ground campaign that kicked them out, but little was done to restore the region to its state of ISIL. More than 300,000 Yazidis still live in refugee camps in very poor conditions, No water, no food infrastructure, no human condition to live in.
