Azarashvili discussed health care accessibility in Georgia with the head of WHO

Reforms carried out to improve access to high quality medicines and health care were discussed by the head of the Ministry of Health of Georgia Zurab Azarashvili with WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the ministry reported.

Azarashvili is in Switzerland on an official visit. He took part in the 76th session of the World Health Assembly.

At the meeting Azarashvili talked about the introduction of international system DRG (Diagnostic Related Group) in Georgia.

In order to improve medical services, in November 2022, the Ministry of Healthcare introduced a new system of financing clinics, according to which the basic tariffs for treatment are calculated.

The Minister noted that since November 1, 2022, standardized prices for medical services, which are the same in all medical institutions of the country, were defined. This reform was implemented through active cooperation with the WHO.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the perspectives of development of the national program of universal healthcare, plans, and the national strategy of healthcare protection, which sets the course of development of the healthcare system until 2030 and defines its strategic directions.

Azarashvili also familiarized Ghebreyesus with the achievements of the state program of hepatitis C and noted that the department is actively working to add the component of hepatitis B to the program this year.

Ghebreyesus expressed his readiness to deepen cooperation with Georgia. Azarashvili, in turn, thanked the head of WHO for his assistance.

The meeting was attended by Alexander Maisuradze, permanent representative of Georgia in Geneva, members of the WHO European Regional Office, international organizations and the UN office.

The session of the World Health Assembly began on May 21 and will end on May 30.
