Today, May 9, is Victory Day, a holiday that marks the end of a murderous war that claimed the lives of millions of soldiers and civilians, the day of liberation from fascism. More than 60 million people died during World War II, including more than 26 million on the Soviet side.

Thousands of Yazidis also fought on the side of the Soviet Union. 30,000 Yazidis were mobilized into the Soviet army. More than 10,000 were awarded combat orders and medals.

It was a matter of course for Yazidis to defend the country to which they had migrated years before they left their homeland. In the 1926 census, there were 14523 Yazidis in the USSR, not counting the Kurds. Yazidis, lived and were registered in Armenia, Georgia Russia.

Among the fighters - Yazidis were both officers and ordinary soldiers who served in the units of the armed forces of the USSR. Yazidi defenders took part in the defense of Moscow, in the liberation of Leningrad, Stalingrad, the Caucasus, Crimea, Warsaw, Budapest, Vienna, in the forcing of the Oder and the battle for Berlin. Subsequently, from their number grew a pleiad of intellectuals, which all Yazidis are proud of.

The Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis remembers and honors the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.

Happy Holidays to you, our dear veterans!
