Erbil - the creation of a safe zone in Syria will endanger the city of Sinjar (Shingal) and the Yazidi minority (Yazidis), said Tuesday the mayor of the city.

Mayor of Shingal Maham Khalil said that the proposed safe zone along the Northern border of Syria with Turkey will force the remaining cells of the sleeping is, along with sympathizers of the terrorist group, to penetrate into the border region of Syria and Iraq. Khalil said that this " will have a negative impact on the security of the Yazidi community.”

"The issue is within our borders," he added. "Until that moment, the Iraqi government cannot ensure the security of the Syrian-Iraqi border, and therefore Baghdad cannot ensure the security of the Yazidi people.”

The mayor of Shingala pointed to the large number of Yazidis living in camps for displaced persons in Kurdistan. Most of them refuse to return to Shingal, despite his release from the IG, for security reasons. Khalil stressed that the establishment of a safe zone would further worsen security in the area and force the ethnic minority to seek security elsewhere.

"The existence of illegal armed forces in Shingal and its mountainous areas, such as the Kurdistan workers' party [PKK], has disrupted the return of refugees from the Kurdistan region camps.”

The emergence of ISIS and its violent attack on Shingal in August 2014 led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Yazidis. Most of them fled to the Autonomous Kurdish region, while others moved to neighboring countries in the region or to Western States.

Others were less fortunate and remained in the war zone, where they had been subjected to atrocities and mass shootings by a terrorist group for many years.

The militants subjected women and girls to sexual slavery, abducted children, forced conversion to another religion, executed dozens of men and abused, sold and trafficked women in areas they controlled in Iraq and Syria.
