Ministry of Health of Iraq has announced the completion of the exhumation of several mass grave sites of Yazidi population in the Sinjar district of Nineveh province. The graves are located near Hamedan.

According to Zaid Ali Abbas, director general of the Department of Forensic Medicine, about 30 remains were found in the four graves. The identities to which the exhumed remains belong will be determined on the basis of international standards applied in forensic medicine.

These mass graves are the result of massacres committed by ISIS terrorists in 2014 against Yazidi population living in and around the village of Hamadan. Yazidis are a minority in Iraq, and were the target of a brutal campaign of violence by IS, recognized as genocide, and which included mass murder, rape and enslavement.

The remains will be subjected to special expertise to identify those killed by comparing their DNA with that of their relatives. Funeral ceremonies will then be conducted in accordance with the religious traditions of Yazidis.
