The third and final stage of negotiations on a free trade agreement between Georgia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ended in Tbilisi, the press service of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia reported.

A joint statement on the completion of negotiations between the two countries was signed by the Head of the Ministry of Economy Levan Davitashvili and the Minister of State for Foreign Trade of the Emirates, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, who is on a visit to Georgia.

"This is a very important day from the point of view of economic cooperation between Georgia and the United Arab Emirates — we have completed negotiations on comprehensive economic cooperation, which will mark the beginning of free trade relations between the two countries", Davitashvili said.

According to the signed document, an approximate date will be determined when, as a result of the completion of domestic procedures, the text of the agreement will be ready for official signing.

"Of course, this will be a new stage in the development of economic relations between the two countries. This is a very comprehensive document that covers not only the issues of tariff—free trade", Davitashvili said.

According to the Minister, together with the investment protection document, the agreement will become an important basis and prerequisite for the further development of economic relations between Georgia and the UAE.

The entry into force of the free trade agreement will open an additional path for Georgian producers to the 10 million-strong UAE market with high purchasing power.

The agreement will cover trade in goods, rules and procedures of origin, customs administration and trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, trade protection measures, investments, trade in services, digital trade and many other issues.

In order to develop economic, trade and investment relations between Georgia and the UAE, in December 2020, the Ministers of Economy of the two countries decided to start negotiations on a free trade agreement, and on May 9, 2022, a "Document on the terms of negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Georgia and the United Arab Emirates" was signed.
