The US Embassy in Georgia has made an extraordinary statement in connection with the draft law on "foreign agents".

Literally, the full text:

"The adoption of the bill is a black day for Georgian democracy.

The Parliament's promotion of Kremlin-inspired laws is incompatible with the clear desire of the Georgian people for European integration and its democratic development.

The adoption of such a law will damage Georgia's relations with its strategic partners and undermine the important work of many Georgian organizations helping fellow citizens.

What is happening raises real questions about the commitment of the ruling party (Georgia) to Euro-Atlantic integration".

Earlier, the US State Department several times expressed concern about plans to adopt such a law in Georgia.

EU Ambassador Pavel Gerchinsky said that this initiative contradicts at least two of the 12 recommendations for obtaining EU candidate status.

Several hundred Georgian NGOs and media have signed a statement against the adoption of such a law in Georgia.

Protests have been taking place in Tbilisi for several days, the participants of which say that the Georgian authorities "want to copy the Russian machine of repression" and completely suppress dissent in the country.
