"In order to help displaced Yazidi families, return to their hometowns in Sinjar, all armed groups and foreign mercenaries must withdraw from this Yazidi district in Nineveh province", US Consul General in Erbil Irwin Hicks said on February 21.

The diplomat made a speech at an event dedicated to the fifth anniversary of housing construction for displaced persons in Iraq, which was jointly organized by the International Migration Agency (IOM) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

In October 2020, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq reached an agreement on the normalization of the situation in Sinjar, on the basis of which the pro-Iranian militias Hashd al-Shaabi and (PKK) from Turkey were obliged to leave the area to ensure the safe return of displaced families.

However, after almost three years, the situation in Sinjar remains the same, and Erbil accuses Baghdad of not fulfilling these obligations.

"If we want to support the return of IDPs and free economic development in the region, the militias must be disbanded and withdrawn. We continue to support the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in implementing an economic reform program that promotes the development of a diversified and dynamic private sector", the Consul General said, stressing that the federal government should step up and fulfill its obligations to ensure security.
