Construction of a memorial for victims of Yazidi genocide has begun in the Iraqi village of Solah near Sinjar. The project was launched by the non-governmental organization "Nadia Initiative" in 2021 in response to a request from the Yazidi community of Iraq. This week, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the construction of the complex began.

In August 2014, DAESH militants/ISIS has occupied Sinjar in northwestern Iraq. Thousands of people were killed, hundreds of thousands were forced to leave their homes, and more than 6,000 women and children were enslaved. A year later, in 2015, Sinjar was released, but 2,700 Yazidis are still missing, and dozens of mass graves remain unexplored.

"This cemetery will be the first project of this scale documenting the genocide of Yazidis. The creation of a symbolic mass grave will attract the attention of public figures and those who are interested in human rights and justice issues," said Khaled Talo Khedr, a member of the community and a relative of the deceased in the village of Solah.

Perpetuating the memory of the victims of the genocide is very important for the Yazidi community, many of whom still do not have the opportunity to return to their homes. The final design of the monument was designed by a Yazidi engineer, taking into account the opinions of the families of the victims and members of Yazidi community. It is intended not only to honor the memory of the victims, but also to become a catalyst for the collective healing of a region that has experienced incredible trauma.

Yazidi people survived 75 ethnic cleansing, but the genocide of 2014 was remembered forever for its cruelty and was documented and recognized by European states and the United States as genocide.
