The Yazidi community in Lincoln, Nebraska United States to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide. Lincoln is home to the largest Yazidi community in the United States, with a total of over 3,000.

On August 3rd, 2014, ISIS launched a campaign against the Yazidi people in Iraq. They killed thousands of people and abducted Yazidi women and children. Five years later, 2,500 women and children are still in ISIS captivity, thousands of men are missing, and hundreds of thousands of Yazidis are still displaced in refugee camps in their own country.

The Yazidi community gathered in Lincoln to honor the thousands of innocent people who have lost their lives at the hands of ISIS and create a better future for those who survived.

Shahnaz Osso hosted the event in English, along with Nibras Khudaida who translated into Kurmanji. Shahnaz highlighter the importance of the event, stating that ‘it allows us to commemorate the 74th Yazidi genocide and grieve with our community. It also allows us to further educate the rest of the world about the atrocities that took place, so we never have to experience a 75th genocide.”

Speakers included Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, Mathew Barber, and many Yazidi speakers who shared their survival stories and poems.
