At the end of last year, another 89 displaced Yazidi families returned to their homes in the Al-Qahtaniyah district from the Sardasht displaced persons camp. According to the plans of the government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the camp will be completely liberated from residents and will be closed in the spring of 2023.

The International Organization for Migration, in cooperation with the Government of Iraq, has launched campaigns to facilitate the return of all displaced persons by restoring several homes to IDPs and providing them with financial assistance and some necessary supplies.

These measures include both financial assistance and the provision of jobs and transportation costs, but the amount of financial assistance varies depending on the standard of living of each family.

"Those displaced persons whose homes have been destroyed and whose financial situation is deteriorating, their homes will be restored and they will be paid $1,000. As for those whose houses have not been demolished, but who have limited income, they will be paid an amount of $ 1,700, and jobs will be created for some of them", said Sardasht Ali Shabo, a member of the camp administration.

After the ISIS attacks, most of the displaced Yazidis headed to Mount Sinjar (120 km west of Mosul). At first, 2,300 Yazidi families of internally displaced persons lived in the Sardasht camp, but now their number has decreased to less than 400 families.

"These 400 Yazidi families were left without means of livelihood, without houses, money, documents. Many of them have lost relatives and friends. They have no relatives who would help them emigrate abroad. They are waiting for the government and international organizations to help them at least return home", Ali Shabo said.
