In memory of those killed in the August war: state flags are lowered in Georgia

In Georgia, the state flags of Georgia are lowered over all the buildings of state agencies today.

In memory of those who died in the struggle for unity and independence in August 2008, the flags were lowered over the Parliament, the presidential Palace, the administration of the government and other buildings of state structures.

Georgia celebrates the 11th anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war. Memorial events organized by the government and public organizations are held throughout the country.

During the hostilities in August 2008, 408 Georgian citizens were killed, including 170 soldiers, 14 police officers and 224 civilians.

The August war has made refugees of 26 thousand inhabitants of the Georgian villages of the Tskhinvali region.  This figure was added to the data of ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia in 1993, as a result, the total number of refugees in Georgia is already 263 598 people.

The most important and difficult consequence of the war, which changed the geopolitical situation in the region – Russia in August 2008 officially announced that it recognizes part of the internationally recognized territory of Georgia as independent States and provides them with military assistance. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow, and the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia officially declared occupied territories.
