The travel time from Tbilisi to Gudauri will be reduced from two to one and a half hours after the launch of the new Kvesheti-Kobi road in 2024, the Department of Highways of Georgia reported.

And from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda it will take 1 hour and 45 minutes, together with two and a half hours on average now.

It is part of the North-South Corridor Expressway. The new road will allow you to bypass the most problematic section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway, which is often closed in winter due to the danger of avalanches.

The Kvesheti-Kobi section will be about 23 kilometers. A two-lane asphalt concrete road, five bridges and five tunnels are being built. The most difficult of them is 9 kilometers long and 15 meters wide, dug under the Cross Pass, from the village of Tskere to the village of Kobi. At the moment, 5 km of the future tunnel has been passed.

The project cost is 1.2 billion lari. The construction is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The Department of Highways notes that the construction of a new section will not only help cargo transportation and the movement of tourists, but also solve the problem of residents of the Hada Valley, who are cut off from the outside world in winter.

At the same time, the state of the Hada Valley is precisely the issue that worries environmentalists and archaeologists, who fear that the construction will damage biodiversity and damage historical monuments.
