Rikard Jozwiak: Georgia is ahead of Ukraine and Moldova according to the technical criteria of the Association
The editor of the European bureau of Radio Liberty, Rikard Jozwiak, who got acquainted with the draft report of the European Commission, said that in terms of meeting the technical criteria for rapprochement with the European Union, Georgia is ahead of Moldova and Ukraine. The report is scheduled to be published in January.
The report will assess the compliance of the legislation of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia with EU legislation in 32 areas that the EU calls "chapters". Compliance of the candidate country with these "chapters" is necessary to start negotiations on EU membership.
Speaking about the assessment report, Jozwiak noted that "it is obvious that Georgia will receive the best assessment, which is the result of many years of work by pro-European and to some extent reform-oriented governments". According to him, Georgia is rated as "moderately prepared", including in the fields of economy and finance. However, the country lags behind in the areas of law, intellectual property and agriculture.
For comparison, while Ukraine received the highest scores in international relations, as well as in defense and security, most areas in the country are "at a certain level of readiness." "As for Moldova, the report is even tougher in its attitude", Jozwiak explained.
The evaluation reports published by the European Commission on the Associated Trio in June 2022 confirm the political criteria for EU membership. Last year Georgia was awarded the "European Perspective". The European Commission has presented the country with 12 recommendations that must be implemented in order to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership. It should be noted that Moldova and Ukraine have become candidate countries for EU membership.
