Yazidis are prohibited from marrying outside their community, and sexual relations with non-believers can lead to the expulsion of the Yazidis involved. However, after the 2014 attacks, Yazidi religious leader Bawe Sheikh developed several new rituals for women who had previously been subjected to violence and slavery by ISIS.

In the Lalish temple, Yazidi priests perform a purification ritual, Yazidi women and girls are washed with water from a sacred spring, reciting prayers, after which the community again considers them "clean", and they are again welcomed as equals.

Christine Robbins, a research professor at the University of Exeter in the UK, says that the fact that Bawe Sheikh did not turn away from Yazidi women who survived violence confirms that he was an incredibly wise man, and this indicates that one of the oldest religions in the world can adapt to modernity.

The rituals of the "purification of Yazidi women survivors of the genocide" have been documented in a film about Lalish, made as part of the archive, which is available on the "Google Arts & Culture" platform.
