Last week in Geneva, at the UN Forum on the Rights of Religious Minorities, a representative of Yazidis, an activist of the Atoo Qerany, spoke.

Qerany in his speech spoke about how Yazidis of the Middle East were oppressed and are being oppressed, that Yazidis are not Kurds and that this is an erroneous opinion. Yazidi activist called on the international community to pay due attention to the problems of Yazidi minority.

A small part of the speech of Atoo Qerany at the forum:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to participate and share our concerns about Yazidi population today. I represent a human rights organization that deals with the problems of Yazidi minority.

Yazidis - are a religion and we have our culture and our history, a large number of states recognize this culture. The word–term "Kurds-Yazidis" is not correct and has no meaning, because we are not Kurds and not Arabs. Yazidis have their roots in history more than 6,000 years ago. So, I repeat, Yazidis are a separate nationality, there is no such thing as the Kurdish Yazidis or the Arab Yazidis. Yazidis are the dominant indigenous population in the Middle East. In our history, we have been subjected to more than 74 mass killings, the international community has done almost nothing to guarantee and protect the rights of Yazidis in Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran.

In 2014, the destruction of Yazidis was planned and was aimed at complete eradication. We have our own culture, our own language and our own history, but we are deprived of the opportunity to use our own language in the regions where we live, so we will be assimilated into Kurdish and Arab cultures.

We are not allowed to claim our religious rights, including political and cultural rights, we are not allowed to claim our rights to our lands, since our lands were occupied by Arabs and Kurds."
