Tbilisi subway workers demand a 20% wage increase - if the transport company fails to come to an agreement, a strike is possible.

In this case, the subway, which is used daily by about half a million people, will stop.

Tbilisi Transport Company confirms a planned meeting with metro unions. The company says it is discussing the 2023 budgeted wage increase with employees, the Georgian service of Radio Liberty reported.

More than two thousand people work in the Tbilisi Metro, a quarter of whom are represented by the independent trade union Ertoba 2013.

The organization said decisions will be made depending on the results of the meeting. If there are no agreements, the subway workers could go on strike in the new year.

The Tbilisi subway already went on strike in the summer of 2018, then all 23 stations stopped and the city was paralyzed. After the strike, employees' wages were increased by 10-30%.

There was a 15% increase earlier this year as well, but subway workers say that "inflation ate it all up.

"Wages should be increased by 20% against the background of inflation and rising prices of consumer goods in the country. This is not even a wage increase, but an indexation. It is a direct obligation of employers to increase this amount by 20% to employees", said Rati Kapanadze, chairman of the Ertoba 2013 trade union.

The mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, said that next year it is planned to increase the salaries of the capital's subway workers by 10%. It is unclear whether the union will be satisfied with this.
