The opposition United National Movement party and its supporters abroad are using the resolutions of the European Parliament (EP) as a political weapon against Georgia, said the head of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations Irakli Chikovani.

In June of this year, the EP adopted a tough resolution on Georgia, which refers to the deterioration of the media environment in Georgia and the destructive role of Bidzina Ivanishvili – "the only oligarch in Georgia who has personal and business ties with the Kremlin". The EP also called on the Georgian authorities to immediately release ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili and the founder of the opposition TV channel "Mtavari Arkhi" Nika Gvaramia.

"It is unacceptable when EP resolutions are used as a political weapon... The "National Movement" and the forces associated with it use all this as their weapon. They are working intensively with partners, and they see this as the only way to maintain their political importance, whereas they are losing support in Georgian society", Chikovani said.

In December, the European Parliament is due to approve a resolution at the plenary session on the report on Georgia's fulfillment of the terms of the Association Agreement with the EU.

The report expresses concern about the deep polarization in the political environment of Georgia, and also speaks of the need to release Saakashvili and allow him to undergo "proper treatment", as well as to review the Gvaramia case. It also refers to a "clear demonstration of politicized justice" against the founders of TBC Bank, the leaders of the opposition party "Lelo for Georgia" Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.

The European People's Party, of which the United National Movement is a part, initiated 200 amendments to the final text of the resolution, which make the text sharper.
