Friendly clans (barracks) of Yazidis and Kurds
In a unique social mix, friendly clans belonging to Yazidi and Muslim religions coexist in Sinjar and the surrounding villages and towns in complete harmony, in which only marriage is prohibited.
Yazidis live in several regions in northern Iraq, primarily in the Sinjar Mountains, as well as in the villages and towns that surround it. Before the occupation of the region by ISIS in August 2014, the number of Yazidis was estimated at more than 270,000 people. The other part of Yazidis, whose number exceeds 250,000 people, are distributed among the Shekhan region, where the Lalish temple, sacred to the Yazidi people, is located.
Near Yazidi villages there are Muslim Kurdish villages where representatives of the tribes "As-Sumuka", "Al-Mandakan", "Al-Khalidiya ", "Al-Haskan", "Al-Hababat" and "Al-Kairan" live. The members of these clans consider themselves cousins of Yazidis because they are socially descended from one ancient Yazidi tribe that includes all these clans.
As an elder of one of these clans, who wanted to remain unknown, tells: "As my great-grandfather told us, our ancestors were Yazidis and after the 7th century many of them forcibly converted to Islam, and some of them voluntarily, and now we are Kurds, but this is a closed topic and we try not to remember about it and many they don't know about it. We have been living side by side with our Yazidi brothers for many centuries, when there was a genocide of the Yazidi minority in 2014, many Kurds helped their Yazidi brothers in the fight against ISIS".
The name of the Yazidis means "worshippers of God", and it is one of the oldest religions in Iraq. Yazidis are a unique people whose faith and nationality are one. Yazidis believe in one God (Hoda) and seven angels headed by Melek Taus. This is a closed, non-missionary religion, so no one can become a Yazidi unless he is born of Yazidi parents.
