Levan Khabeishvili, a member of the Parliament of Georgia, one of the leaders of the United National Movement, became the fourth candidate for the post of chairman of the party.

He said at a briefing that he made the decision after "several days of consultations with friends and colleagues". Prior to that, Khabeishvili denied the possibility of his participation in the elections of the head of the UNM.

"I take this challenge not against anyone, but to strengthen the National Movement to bring real, uncompromising and combative opposition back to Georgian politics and the electorate. The UNM must return to the people for whom the ideals of the Rose Revolution are important", Khabeishvili said.

Khabeishvili came to the briefing with a support group represented by Davit Kirkitadze, Giorgi Botkoveli, Levan Bezhashvili, Devi Chankotadze and Dimitri Shashkini.

The ruling party, which does not hide its satisfaction with the crisis in the party that has been the main opponent of the authorities for the last ten years, treated the nomination of Khabeishvili with irony.

"I support it. I'll be glad if they choose Khabeishvili. Let's have some more fun", said Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

Khabeishvili himself has already come up with his first initiative - he spoke in favor of creating a rescue headquarters for the imprisoned third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. He proposed Giorgi Chaladze, his rival in the elections of the UNM chairman, to head the headquarters.

At the moment, four candidates are running for the post of chairman of the United National Movement: in addition to Khabeishvili and Chaladze, the current chairman Nika Melia and activist Giorgi Mumladze have nominated their candidates.

Melia, who has been head of UNM for almost two years, said he was not afraid of the elections, spoke about betrayal in the party ranks and promised to tell about party squabbles during the election campaign.

Giorgi Mumladze has been active in politics for about two years. Before that he was known as a researcher at Ilia University's Center for Constitutional Studies, which criticized both the National Movement and the Georgian Dream for frequent constitutional changes.

Lawyer Giorgi Chaladze joined the UNM only last year. The media write about him as being close to Saakashvili family; lately he often appears with Giuli Alasania, the mother of the third president.

The exact date of the elections is still unknown. A working group must prepare the rules of procedure, after which it will be discussed by the political council and the date of intra-party elections will be specified.

Last week part of the UNM activists demanded the re-election of the party leadership, after which the National Movement formed a working group to develop the rules of procedure.

The crisis in the former ruling party has been going on for several months. One of the leaders, Irakli Nadiradze, who demands the election of a new leadership, said that the party is helpless today and it needs strengthening in order to oppose the Georgian Dream and achieve the release of Mikheil Saakashvili.

Apart from him, other leaders have lately openly expressed their dissatisfaction with Nika Melia's policies. The party members disagree on the key issues which concern the role of Mikheil Saakashvili, party relations with former Defense Minister, businessman Davit Kezerashvili, cooperation with other political unions and reaction to certain events.

Since late September several leaders, including member of the political council Badri Basishvili, have left UNM. More recently, MP Nona Mamulashvili has left the party.
