Hundreds of Yazidis have emigrated from Iraqi Kurdistan over the past 20 days.

After eight years spent in camps for displaced Yazidis, Sufyan Dahil could no longer live in inhumane conditions in tents, so he decided to use illegal immigration routes in the hope of reaching Europe.

Sufyan is 21 years old, he is from Sinjar district, a young man and his family were displaced after the 2014 ISIS attacks and they were placed in the Mam Rashan camp in Dahuk province.

On August 1, 2022, Sufyan left the camp for displaced persons, faced the difficulties and dangers of illegal immigration, as the young man himself tells, he spent three days without food and water until he arrived in Greece.

Now, in the Greek camp, Sufyan is waiting for the right opportunity to resume his journey again to get to the Netherlands and try to start a new life there, because there, in Iraq, the Yazidis are simply being driven from their ancestral lands.

According to statistics provided by the Yazidi media, in the last two months a new wave of migration of Yazidis out of the country has begun, especially among the displaced people living in Kurdistan.

Yazidis make up 30 percent of the total displaced population of more than 664,000 people, and in May last year thousands of Yazidi families were again displaced from Sinjar to camps due to tensions and armed clashes that broke out in the area. More than 50 people migrate daily from the camps and Sinjar.

According to KirkukNow, the main reasons for the migration of Yazidis are the massive destruction caused by the war in their areas, the lack of security, stability and services, as well as the hardships of living in tents, lack of drinking water and poor quality of humanitarian aid distributed by the Iraqi government.

In recent years, dozens of Yazidi citizens have been sent to France in several stages in accordance with an agreement between France and the International Organization for Migration.
