The story of the Yezidi girl Aisha. I want to tell you about Uncle Abu Khdra, how he sacrificed himself and his family to save those surviving Yezidis after ISIS terrorists entered our village.

"I will never forget this day in my life", Aisha begins her story.

"In the early August morning of 2014, ISIS attacked our village. A few days before these events, Iraqi soldiers arrived and promised to protect our Yezidi villages. A few days later, Kurds joined them and also promised us protection but exactly a day before the ISIS invasion, they both fled, taking all the weapons from the village with them, leaving us unarmed against the ISIS terrorists.

In the morning, ISIS terrorists drove into the village in jeeps almost without resistance, gathered the entire population of the village in the center, separated men from women and children. Then the men were brought to the wall of one of the houses and shot, we wives and children were shocked by what we saw, our fathers, husbands and brothers are being killed before our eyes. On pain of death, we could only scream and cry, but at some point everyone began to run away, and the terrorists began to catch us. Me and a few girls managed to escape. Running through the village, we were called by our neighbor grandfather Khdr, who was barely standing on his feet, he was an elderly man. We ran into his yard. After a couple of minutes, ISIS militants ran up to him and started asking about us, but my grandfather did not give us away and even stabbed one of the bandits with a knife. The other one immediately killed Grandfather Khdr with a assault rifle. Seeing this, we ran out of the house through the back door and ran into the field, the tall grass saved us. After waiting out the night, we realized that it was dangerous to return to the village, I remembered how my grandfather told me that we had to go towards Mount Shangal, as our ancestors did during wars and attacks. In the morning, we went towards Mount Shangal, we managed to escape and only then we realized what had happened to our village".
