More than 5,000 special cases were initiated in Shangal related to crimes against the Yezidi people committed by militants of the terrorist group ISIS (Islamic State).

Shakir Mahmoud Mirani, head of the Investigative Committee for IS crimes and victims, said that so far 108 mass graves have been discovered in the vicinity of the Shangal district, 57 of them have been opened and the remains of 324 people have been handed over to their families. According to Mirani, IS terrorists kidnapped a total of 2916 people, 1056 of whom were women.

Addressing those who witnessed the atrocities of ISIS and suffered from their persecution, Mirani said: "These people and families affected by ISIS emigrated abroad through international institutions. We are asking them to provide information about what they saw and what they went through".

In 2014, ISIS terrorists completely captured the provinces of Mosul, Saladin and Anbar, as well as parts of Diyala and Kirkuk, a few years later these territories were liberated from the jihadists.

Despite the fact that more than 4 years have passed since Iraq was partially cleared of ISIS, the terrorist group's attacks continue in the rural areas of these cities to this day.
