Georgia's European integration is a choice not only of the government, but also of the Georgian people. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said this during a meeting with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Madrid on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

The Administration of the Government informs that special attention was paid during the negotiations to the discussion of the European perspective of Georgia.

Garibashvili called it a "historic decision" to provide Georgia with a European perspective.

The Prime Minister promised that Georgia would "actively work to implement the recommendations of the European Commission on granting candidate status" and thanked Charles Michel for his personal support of the country's European integration.

"A wonderful meeting with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. After deciding on the prospects of Georgia's membership in the EU, we will work closely together to advance Georgia on its path to obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership.

I confirmed the commitment of our government to work tirelessly to achieve all the priorities set out by the European Commission," Garibashvili wrote on his Twitter following the meeting.

The conversation touched upon the ongoing war in Ukraine and, as a result, the deterioration of the security situation in the Eastern European region.

"The Prime Minister once again recorded the solidarity and unwavering support of the Government of Georgia and the Georgian people towards Ukraine," the official statement said.

Charles Michel also called Brussels' decision to accept Georgia into the EU in the future a "geostrategic moment."

"At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia, he confirmed the EU's support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia. This is a truly geostrategic moment.

Last week, #EUCO decided on the prospect of Georgia's membership in the EU. We commit to continue to support the process of carrying out much-needed reforms," the President of the European Council wrote on Twitter.

On June 23, the leaders of the EU countries decided to recognize Georgia's European perspective and assign it the status of a candidate immediately after fulfilling certain priorities. All of them are formulated in the recommendations of the European Commission, consisting of 12 points. These include overcoming polarization, de–oligarchizing, reforms of the courts and the electoral system, and so on. The first assessment of the fulfillment of the conditions should be carried out by the European Commission at the end of 2022.

Large-scale actions have already taken place in Georgia demanding the resignation of the cabinet of Irakli Garibashvili and the formation of a technical government that will carry out reforms.
