Charles Michel: Now is the time to realize that the future of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia belongs to the EU
"Now is the time to realize that the future of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia belongs to the EU. I urge you to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. In parallel, we will continue strong humanitarian, military, economic and financial support to Ukraine," Charles Michel, President of the European Council, wrote on his Twitter account and shared a video message.
According to him, these countries will have to fulfill the conditions on the European path, the Georgian Public Broadcaster writes.
"I believe that now is the time to recognize the European perspective of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. The future of these countries and their peoples is in the European Union. More specifically, my intention is that we will decide to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. Obviously, these countries will have to fulfill the conditions on the European path. Especially in the field of the rule of law and in terms of fighting corruption. The Ukrainian people have chosen freedom, democracy, and a European future. And now they're fighting for it, and we're on their side. When the war has returned to Europe, we must strengthen our stability and security not only within the EU, but also with other European partners on the continent. The idea of a European political union can strengthen cooperation and make Europe safer and more developed. And this idea does not replace the extension. We are stepping up the expansion process with the countries of the Western Balkans to promote their integration. The Western Balkans are important for the European Union, and the European Union is important for the Western Balkans," Charles Michel said in his address.
