The leaders of the European Parliament's Political Group called on the heads of state and Government of the member states, who will meet on June 23-24 to decide on the applications of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, to grant the status of candidates to Ukraine and Moldova in accordance with article 49 of the EU Treaty, which will be the beginning of a merit-based process.
The statement of the leaders of the Political Group mentions Georgia separately, and the group calls on the member States to "work to ensure that Georgia receives the same status, in accordance with the legitimate aspirations of the Georgian people."
The statement also says that the EU must show courage, perseverance, and foresight "in the current context of the brutal aggression against our European neighbor, Ukraine and the deterioration of the international situation."
According to the document, the EU should be a loyal partner and a "reliable geopolitical entity" that justifies its principles and values by showing solidarity with those countries that share the same ideals.
The statement stresses that Ukrainians want to live in "a free, democratic and prosperous country that is a proud and loyal member of the European family."
"We understand that the same aspirations are shared by the peoples of Georgia and Moldova, as well as the countries of the Western Balkans, whose expectations cannot be ignored," the document emphasizes.
The statement was made against the background when the European Parliament adopted resolutions on the violation of press freedom in Georgia. During the debate on the resolution in Strasbourg, MEPs made harsh statements to the ruling party of Georgia because of its role in the "democratic retreat" of the country.
