Radio Liberty publishes the text of a draft statement in which the European Parliament expresses support for granting the status of a candidate for EU membership to Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova.

The text of the statement may still be amended, however, according to the correspondent of Radio Liberty on EU affairs, key issues, including the requirement to grant candidate status, will remain in the text.

It should be noted that the decision on granting candidate status is made by the European Commission, therefore the Union of Leaders of Political Groups of the European Parliament can only call for an appropriate decision.

The statement of the leaders of political groups in the European Parliament says:

"On behalf of the Conference of Presidents, the leaders of the political groups of the European Parliament will address the leaders of the member states and governments, who will meet in Brussels in two weeks to decide on the application of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to join the European Union.

We must show courage, bravery, and foresight in the face of the deteriorating international situation.
Changes in the geopolitical reality require action on our part. By doing so, we show loyalty to our principles and values.

Ukrainians, whose homeland is under fierce attacks, as well as Moldovans and Georgians, who are moving towards a bright future, are waiting for a signal that their place is in the European family.

Therefore, this Chamber urges you to grant Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia the status of candidates for EU membership in accordance with Article 49 of the EU Treaty and [their] achievements."
