Divorces

Divorce is one of the important social phenomena, and its high level in any society will lead to social imbalance. Divorce is a complex phenomenon, and its causes are not limited to just a few factors. In any society, depending on prevailing conditions and social changes, some of the reasons for divorce may be more important and influential. The process of divorce in traditional and conservative societies is most often taboo and a closed topic for discussion.

The problems of a social phenomenon like divorce in our Yezidi community is also a closed topic for discussion.

When it comes to divorce in a Yazidi family, the relatives of the spouses do everything to make them change their minds by taking such a step. Those who are against divorce in the Yezidi community, more often, refer to the fact that for a woman it is a disgrace that will affect her family.

"Be patient for the sake of the children", "cheating on you, nothing, he's a man" - such phrases can often be heard in Yezidi marginal families. When it comes to divorce, "patience" is the main argument for those who are against it.

As you have already noticed, gender discrimination plays an important role in the issue of divorce. Most often, it is Yazidi women who are discriminated against who have decided to take this step and divorce their spouses, they become outcasts in the Yazidi community after this process. They are branded and blamed for all the sins of her husband. As a result, we have such a picture, Yazidi women who are not happy in marriages or are even in a forced marriage have two ways out, or they continue to suffer beatings, infidelity, or they gather strength and file for divorce knowing the consequences. I would like to note that we are talking about marginal Yezidi families.

We Yezidis need to discuss topics that are banned more often because of our ancestors who lived in a different social era. Then, perhaps, we Yezidis will be able to preserve our identity without going down the path of marginalization.
