In connection with the renewed fighting between the Iraqi army and PKK-affiliated groups in Shangala, Yazidi religious leader Bawe Sheikh Ali Elias called on the Iraqi government to protect the lives of innocent civilians in Shangala and comply with international humanitarian laws.
Bawe Sheikh stressed the need to establish dialogue and end conflicts to achieve security and stability, as well as the importance of reaching a solution between Baghdad and Erbil to resolve the situation in the Shangal area.
"We also call on the Iraqi Government and other parties to protect the Yezidi population in Shangal, comply with international law and avoid military operations in populated areas, especially within the city. We call on the Government of the Kurdistan Region and the Government of Iraq to find a lasting solution for the Shangal area, which is still suffering from mass killings and ISIS attacks. We call on the relevant authorities of the Kurdistan government to provide haven to the Yezidi families who have gone to Kurdistan," the religious leader of the Yezidis said.
According to available information, at this time, some representatives of the Shangal self-defense unit laid down their weapons to avoid clashes and mass casualties among the peaceful Yezidi population.
On October 9, Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement to normalize the situation in Shangal, but nothing has changed since then.
