On May 2 and 3, the Regional Forum of Europe and Central Asia on National Minorities was held in a hybrid format. The Regional Forum was led by the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues and was organized by the Tom Lantos Institute in Vienna, Austria.

Oksana Smoeva and David Babaev, employees of the Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yezidi, took part in the regional forum as speakers. During the two-day discussions, our speakers touched upon the topics of discrimination of the Yezidi minority by the titular nation in the countries of the South Caucasus, the participation and non-participation of the Yezidi minority in the social life of the country of residence. The topics of reforming and protecting and implementing the framework of the rights of national minorities were touched upon.

Oksana Smoeva and David Babaev also provided several recommendations related to the thematic sessions of the forum.

The main purpose of the event is to develop a regional document with practical recommendations reflecting regional conditions and problems of national minorities, which the organizers received during the meeting because of discussions and contributions from participants.

The Europe & Central Asia Regional Forum will provide regional information that will be used in the thematic work of the Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues for his report at the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in March 2023. In addition, the discussions will form the basis of the work and recommendations of the 15th session of the Forum on Minority Issues, which will be held in Geneva on December 1 and 2, 2022.
