The topic of abortion in different cultures is a kind of taboo for discussion and publicity. Yezidis are no exception either. Until now, for many Yazidi parents, the gender of their child plays an important role, there are several so-called "logical" reasons for this: a girl who is supposedly easier to raise, or a boy who will become a "continuer of the family" and "protector". Sometimes this desire is so strong that parents are ready to give up the unborn child simply because he turned out to be the "wrong" sex. Abortion in this case is called "selective", because in it parents are not satisfied with the fact of pregnancy itself, namely, the characteristics of a particular embryo.

But what is selective abortion?

"Selective abortion is a discriminatory type of abortion in which parents intentionally dispose of embryos of a certain sex. In the modern world, such discriminatory practices against unborn girls are widespread in countries with a patriarchal lifestyle combined with the belittled status of women in society. These include China, Vietnam, western and central India, Pakistan, the Transcaucasian Republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and other countries."

Unfortunately, in the Yezidi community, some families resort to this kind of abortion, most often such a "picture can be observed in marginal Yezidi families.

The system in such families is patriarchal, where women are not allowed to express their thoughts freely, some women show traces of forced washing of consciousness. Therefore, for them, the firstborn should be a boy, otherwise, they resort to selective abortion. In such families, there are no traces of education and knowledge of basic human rights, which, as we see, has a disastrous effect on our Yezidi community. Is it possible to understand and justify such people? The question is rhetorical, to justify such a thing is a crime against humanity and here we are talking about selective abortion.

The way out of this situation is not to remain silent and discuss such hot topics among the Yezidi community to show them that having an abortion because of gender is an immoral act.
