One of the ancient Yezidi traditions is to harvest olives at the Lalesh temple, from which olive oil is later made. Male volunteers press olives in the courtyard of the temple, squeezing oil from them, which is used only for lighting lamps in the Lalesh temple and other religious shrines. The trees on which the olives grow belong to the Yezidi temple.
Employees of the Cultural Center at the Lalesh temple said that the process of olive oil extraction begins with washing olives, then the clean harvest is placed in a special vessel and left dry until the largest amount of water in the stone evaporates, after which it is cleaned and placed in special bags, the process of oil extraction consists in pressing.
The olive pressing ceremony is held annually in the spring season in the presence of the Bawe Sheikh, the representative of the Emir of the Yezidis, and the servants of the Yezidi temples.
The oil extracted in these ceremonies is harvested from the olives of the olive grove in the valley of the Lalesh Temple, in which more than 1,400 trees grow. The process of pressing olives is an ancient tradition because the oil is used to light 366 lanterns in the sacred temple of the Yezidis Lalesh and other religious shrines.
