"We must have a close partnership with Georgia, we need to continue military cooperation with Georgia, which is vital, we need cooperation to strengthen democratic stability," US Ambassador to the OSCE Michael Carpenter said in an exclusive interview with Georgia's Channel One.
At the same time, according to Michael Carpenter, Georgia is a clear example of Russia's failure to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008.
"I have repeatedly raised the issue of Georgia during negotiations with Russia, because we cannot trust Russia's intentions. Russia claims that it mobilizes forces only on its territory, which also happened in Georgia in August 2008. We have already seen this rule of Russian behavior. We know that she can use all this for a disguised attack. However, now, in the case of Ukraine, we know a little better what may happen in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, Georgia is a symbol of unfulfilled obligations. We have a ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, which has not yet been implemented. This agreement calls on Russia to withdraw its troops from the barracks to the positions they occupied before the 2008 war, Russia has not fulfilled this obligation. Instead, it occupies 20% of Georgia's territory," Carpenter said.
