Georgia's foreign trade turnover (exports plus imports of goods) in 2021 increased by 25.6% compared to 2020 and amounted to $ 14.3 billion. This is reported by the National Statistics Service of the country "Sakstat".

From January to December, $ 10 billion worth of products were imported into the country, which is 25.1% more than in 2020. Exports amounted to $4.2 billion– which is 26.9% more than in 2020. Georgia's negative trade balance amounted to $5.8 billion, which is 23.9% more than in 2020.

Main trends

If, according to the results of the pre-pandemic 2019, Turkey was Georgia's largest trading partner, now China has come out on top. It is also important that the export of Georgian products to the EU countries has grown by only 3% over the past year, reaching $ 717 million. Thus, in 2021, the EU accounted for 16.9% of Georgia's total exports. At the same time, supplies of Georgian products to the CIS increased by 34% to $2 billion– which is almost half of the country's total exports (47.6%).

* Bulgaria – $253.9 million, a decrease of 18.8% compared to 2020;

* USA - 194.7 million dollars, growth of 143.2%;

* Kazakhstan – 96.2 million dollars, growth 102%;

* Spain – 89.3 million dollars, an increase of 6.7%.

What does Georgia trade in

A wide range of goods are exported from Georgia – copper ores and concentrates, ferroalloys, natural grape wines, spirits, mineral waters, cars, gold, forest and other nuts, etc.

In 2021, exports of ferroalloys increased the most – by 93%, nitrogen fertilizers – by 65.4%, hazelnuts and other nuts - by 25.8%. At the same time, exports since the beginning of 2021 have fallen only in gold by 34.2%.

It is important that the main position of Georgian exports – copper ores and concentrates - in most cases is re-export. For example, 80% of copper ores and concentrates exported from the country to China in 2021 were produced outside Georgia.

The main export goods of Georgia to Russia are ferroalloys. Exports of these goods to Russia last year increased to $ 172 million (by 59%). Georgian wines account for the second place in exports to Russia – $ 131 million (an increase of 10%).

Almost half of Georgian exports to Azerbaijan account for the re-export of cars. In 2021, passenger cars worth about $248 million were exported from Georgia to the neighboring country.

The main share of imports to Georgia is traditionally represented by passenger cars – $ 898.7 million (an increase of 15%), oil and petroleum products - $ 822.6 million (an increase of 65%), copper ores and concentrates - $ 736.1 million (an increase of 24.6%), medicines - $ 382 million (an increase of 16.8%), as well as petroleum gas and hydrocarbon gas, wheat, electricity, telephones, etc.

In 2021, the import of vaccines, blood, immune products increased by 169.4%, computers and their blocks – by 127.9%, oil and petroleum products – by 65%, trucks – 45.4%, telephones – 34.9%.
