The Georgian Orthodox Church, like the entire Orthodox world, celebrates one of the 12 main Christian holidays on January 19 — Epiphany.
The Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated in Georgia as a public holiday, in state institutions and educational institutions it is an official day off.
Festive services will be held in all temples of the country. In Tbilisi, the liturgy at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity will begin at 10:00.
At the end of the service, the rite of the Great Water Consecration will be performed. This rite is performed twice a year: on the eve of the feast of Epiphany - after the liturgy or Vespers, and on the day of the feast itself - after the service.
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is closely connected with the event of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, described by the evangelists — the baptism that the prophet John the Baptist, aka John the Baptist, performed in the Jordan River. The second name of the holiday is Epiphany. This name recalls the miracle that happened during the baptism of Christ: The Holy Spirit descended from heaven in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven called Jesus the son.
Most of the population of Georgia are Orthodox Christians. On this day, godchildren visit their godparents to congratulate them on the holiday. Another well-established tradition is the mass baptism of infants, which is held on the initiative of the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.
The Patriarch baptizes the third and subsequent children in families whose parents were married in the church. The goal of this initiative is to improve the demographic situation in the country. Today, Ilia II has more than 40 thousand godchildren.
