Sweden and France have made joint efforts to prosecute ISIS members for crimes they committed against the Yazidi people.
European Union Agency for Cooperation in Criminal Justice (Eurojust) Coordinates investigations of crimes against Yezidis to help countries exchange information and evidence faster to bring to justice those responsible for crimes and genocide.
The authorities participating in the joint investigation team will cooperate with the United Nations Investigation Team.
These investigative efforts will be of additional value to judicial authorities in other EU Member States or third countries who want to put an end to the impunity of terrorists involved in crimes such as slavery or sexual violence against members of the Yazidi people.
The Yazidis were victims of horrific crimes by ISIS when the terrorist group captured Sinjar in August 2014. After the execution of thousands of people, IS militants abducted a total of 6,417 Yezidis, almost half of whom are still missing.
In May 2021, a UN investigative panel ruled that "there is clear and convincing evidence that the crimes" committed by ISIS "against the Yezidi people clearly constitute genocide."
