The Georgian Parliament has adopted amendments to the "Tobacco Control Law" — 80 deputies voted in favor; one was against.

Now the law prohibits smoking in a taxi, as well as in a private car, if a minor is traveling in it.

According to the bill, smoking in taxis, as well as on cable cars and on water transport will be punishable by a fine of 200 lari ($65).

The fine for smoking in private cars in the presence of minors will be 50 lari ($ 16).

In case of repeated violations during the year, the number of monetary sanctions will double.

The Georgian Parliament adopted a recommendation to ban smoking in taxis and private cars in the presence of children in April of this year. After monitoring compliance with the "Tobacco Control Law", the deputies decided that maintaining such a provision was necessary.

The initiators of the amendments were deputies from the majority Dmitry Khundadze and Vladimir Kakhadze.

Anti-smoking legislation came into force in Georgia in May 2017.

To date, smoking is prohibited in almost all public places in Georgia. The exception is casinos and some slot machine salons, especially equipped places on the territories of universities and medical institutions. It is also possible to smoke actors during the performance if the director's plan requires it.

To date, prices for a pack of cigarettes in Georgia start from 5.5 lari. For comparison— in 2017, a pack of cigarettes cost about 1.5 lari.
