Georgia and Japan plan to start free trade talks

In the first ten months of 2021, the trade turnover between the countries increased by 11%.

The establishment of a free trade regime between Georgia and Japan will create new opportunities for strengthening and deepening trade and economic relations between the countries and will further inspire business representatives, Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava said.

Turnava held an online meeting with Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Honda Taro, at which she expressed Georgia's interest in starting negotiations on a free trade agreement between the countries.

During the meeting, the sides discussed priority areas of bilateral relations.

The Head of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia positively assessed the cooperation between the countries in the field of investments.

At the beginning of this year, the countries signed an agreement "On liberalization, support and protection of investments between Georgia and Japan". The document provides for the introduction of mechanisms for the legal protection of investments in both countries, which should facilitate the movement of private capital between Georgia and Japan, stimulate entrepreneurial initiative, help the effective development of economic resources and deepen economic relations.

It was noted that in the three quarters of 2021, investments from Japan to Georgia increased by 32%. In addition, there is an increase in bilateral trade - in the first 10 months of 2021, the trade turnover increased by 11%, and exports from Georgia to Japan increased by 26%.

The sides expressed their readiness to contribute to the strengthening of bilateral ties.

Georgia and Japan established diplomatic relations on August 3, 1992. Japan provides assistance to Georgia in the development of the economy, energy, medicine, agriculture, transport and infrastructure.
