Iraq: Calm returns to Sinjar
Calm is returning to Sinjar district, most government departments have resumed work. 50 volunteers have been appointed to the traffic police, among them local Yezidis, appointed by the Council of the Autonomous Administration.
The Council of the Autonomous Administration in Sinjar decided to temporarily suspend the work of government departments in the Sinjar region, since the Iraqi government "did not take a position" regarding the ongoing attacks by terrorist groups in areas where the Yazidi population lives.
Demonstrations were held by the local Yezidi population condemning terrorist attacks in the Sinuni area. Due to the inaction of the Iraqi authorities and the army, clashes occurred between residents of the area and a military detachment of the Iraqi army, during which two civilians and an Iraqi army soldier were wounded.
According to local residents, Yazidi families who live near the headquarters of the Sinjar resistance units have left their homes, fearing the resumption of clashes that occurred the day before. The silence of the Iraqi government over the terrorist attack on Sinjar caused anger among the local Yezidi population.
