The PKK plans to dig new tunnels in the heart of Mount Shangal and create a new safe haven for itself, experts from Syria were invited for this. Mount Shangal has been a savior and a refuge for the Yezidi people for many centuries.
Observers believe that these measures will strengthen the PKK elements in Shangal, which will prevent the implementation of the agreement on the normalization of the situation in the city.
Experts note that the PKK is taking advantage of the political and security situation between Baghdad and Erbil. According to some reports, at least 20 new tunnels have already been dug in the heart of Mount Shangal to provide strongholds for party elements.
Iraqi officials said the move indicates that the PKK has no plans to leave the city, but instead wants to turn the area into its refuge, where the Yazidi population lives, especially given that a number of party leaders and families have recently been transferred from Syria to the Kurdistan Region, to Shangal and the surrounding area.
On the other hand, Mahma Khalil, the mayor of Shangal, said that this information, unfortunately, is reliable and that Baghdad knows about it. According to him, they want Mount Shangal to become a new focal point for them, because the area has a very important political dimension, is located near the Syrian-Iraqi border and has natural strongholds. He described the huge economic benefits of smuggling oil, agricultural products, animals, etc., as well as security and economic benefits.
It is worth noting that a representative of the Iraqi Joint Operational Command recently stated that the situation in Shangal is under control, which was met with a critical reaction from Kurdish officials and the local Yezidi population, who replied that the situation on the ground is completely different from what the military representative claims.
The fate of the local Yezidi population remains unknown.
