The unique arched Inguri Hydroelectric dam is becoming one of the sights of Georgia.
The National Tourism Administration of Georgia conducted the first tour of the Inguri HPP for travel companies and media representatives.
Inguri HPP, located in Western Georgia, is a unique technical and engineering structure. In 2015, the arched Inguri Hydroelectric dam was awarded the status of a cultural heritage monument. The total height of this dam is 271.5 meters, and the length is 728 meters. The Inguri hydroelectric dam is one of the five largest arch dams in the world.
The Energy Development Fund and its subsidiary "Inguri Tourist Center" have started the implementation of the first stage of the project "The Arch Dam of the Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station attraction of the world level".
As part of the project, it is planned to equip the museum and information space of viewing platforms, an outdoor concert venue and a cable car.
According to the tourism administration, the tour participants were shown the most interesting sections of the arched dam of the hydroelectric power station, which were still inaccessible for inspection. The duration of the route was two hours and tourists were able to look at the dam bridge, tunnel, reservoir shields and other interesting places.
The project also provides for the opening of a scientific center, the longest zipline in the region will be built, there will be entertainment areas and other objects of interest to tourists.
The production capacity of Inguri HPP is 1,300 MW, which covers half of Georgia's electricity needs.
The construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Inguri River began in 1961 and was completed in 1977.
The Inguri hydroelectric dam is located on the territory of the Samegrelo - Zemo Svaneti region, the control panel is in Abkhazia, which is not controlled by the Georgian authorities.
