Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan Masrour Barzani received British Ambassador to Iraq Mark Bryson. The parties discussed the Sinjar agreement reached between Erbil and Baghdad on the Yezidi district of Shangal, where much of the population is Yezidis. According to a press release from Barzani's office, the sides also exchanged views on post-election events in Iraq and Kurdistan's relations with the United Kingdom.
"The Prime Minister expressed hope that the election results will help stability in Iraq and reduce the problems between Erbil and Baghdad," the press release said.
The conversation also focused on the threat of terrorism in the region and the agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq on the normalization of the situation in Sinjar, designed to create conditions for the return of displaced Yezidis.
In October 2020, the KRG and Baghdad announced an agreement to normalize the situation in Sinjar, based on which all armed groups should leave the predominantly Yezidi-populated area. However, pro-Iranian militia groups and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) still refuse to leave Sinjar.
Thousands of Yazidis fled Sinjar when their area was attacked by ISIS terrorists in August 2014. Most of the refugees are still hesitant to return to their hometowns and villages due to the unstable situation.
